From ingredient to a defined product
The central decision is whether the plant makes single-strength juice, a concentrate base or another formulated product. Fruit-size grading, peel contact and pulp management should be matched to that declared outlet. Sort sound fruit by size, wash the peel and extract the juice with controlled contact between peel and flesh. Separate seeds and finish to the chosen pulp level. Direct juice, concentrate and peel-containing marmalade diverge after extraction; peel oil recovery is a separate stream to evaluate.
Illustrated product route: Orange juice
Product directions to specify
- NFC juice
- juice concentrate
- marmalade
These are alternative product briefs. The illustration represents its declared route, rather than every optional operation at once.
Fruit or prepared-feed boundary
- Which orange varieties and diameter range must the extractor handle, and what peel-oil carryover is acceptable in the finished juice?
- Should the product retain visible pulp, and will peel handling be limited to waste removal or include a separately specified co-product route?
- Define incoming state, variety, maturity, accepted defects and supply interruptions in the purchasing brief. A proposed line should be demonstrated with representative commercial lots rather than a single ideal sample.
Follow the selected material route
- 01
Receive and size
Inspect sound oranges and sort the specified diameter range.
Keep seasonal maturity and fruit-size records so an extractor demonstration can be related to the actual supply contract.
Equipment duty: Receiving conveyor and citrus grader
- 02
Wash and inspect
Remove surface debris and reject unsuitable fruit before extraction.
The inspection point needs lighting, access and a reject route; it should not simply carry damaged fruit into the next operation.
Equipment duty: Washer, rinse elevator and sorting conveyor
- 03
Extract juice
Recover the liquid flesh fraction with controlled peel contact.
Evaluate juice quality together with extraction recovery; the setting giving the largest gross liquid volume may introduce unwanted peel or coarse tissue.
Equipment duty: Citrus juice extraction unit
- 04
Set the pulp content
Remove seeds and membrane fragments while retaining the specified pulp.
A high-pulp product and a low-pulp concentrate base need different acceptance samples and finishing decisions.
Equipment duty: Coarse screen and juice finisher
- 05
Blend approved lots
Bring compliant lots to an agreed analytical and sensory basis.
Identify the measurements, allowed blend components and sampling method before describing the product as standardised.
Equipment duty: Covered juice tank and sanitary transfer
- 06
Separate NFC and concentrate duties
Route juice to the specified preservation and packaging system.
An evaporator and any aroma-recovery arrangement are selected for a concentrate project; they are not automatically included in an NFC line.
Equipment duty: Buffer tank with optional evaporation connection
- 07
Specify preservation around the actual product
Confirm the measured product composition, particulate load and intended storage chain before the treatment and filling arrangement is selected.
The NFC juice or concentrate base route needs its own validated process. A drawing, a heat-exchanger name or a successful extraction trial does not establish a safe treatment schedule or a finished shelf-life claim.
Equipment duty: Selected treatment unit, controlled transfer and process instruments
- 08
Fill, identify and verify the packed ingredient
Match the approved ingredient to the selected package and handling conditions. Record the production lot and the conditions required by its defined distribution route.
The filling boundary belongs in the project specification: container format, product-contact interface, filling hygiene, storage and the downstream user’s receiving requirements must agree before commercial acceptance.
Equipment duty: Compatible filler, packaging interface and lot-identification station
Equipment duties around the ingredient
Receiving conveyor and citrus grader
Control the incoming-material presentation before preparation.
Check actual lot condition, peak arrivals and the accepted size range. Provide a sample/reject point that can be operated without obstructing feed to the next machine.
Citrus juice extraction unit
Juice extraction and peel separation.
Extraction contact and fruit dimensions should be evaluated together. Confirm the accepted pulp and peel character before comparing recovery. A separate rind-oil operation needs its own specification.
Coarse screen and juice finisher
Create the agreed intermediate condition for downstream equipment.
Agree an acceptance sample, a measurable particle or separation target and a reject-handling method. Select contact parts and access arrangements after trials with representative material.
Product buffer and transfer system
Connect preparation, treatment and filling without assuming all sections run at the same rate.
Record viscosity, particle character, temperature envelope and expected stoppages. Confirm drainability, sampling points and how unaccepted or interrupted product is identified and handled.
Preservation, packaging and cleaning interfaces
Complete the declared process boundary.
The quoted scope should identify included instruments, services, containers, hygienic connections and validation responsibilities. An item list without these interfaces is not a complete line specification.
Quality, rejects and the actual product
Check soluble solids, acidity, pulp distribution and peel notes using representative samples. Keep samples through the intended handling route before accepting sensory performance.
Define the sampling location, sample preparation, measurement method and acceptable variation. Retain traceable comparisons through the intended downstream route; a favourable immediate sample is not proof of storage stability.
Separated material streams
Handle peel, seeds and finisher solids as defined side streams. Oil recovery, peel processing or secondary extraction requires a separate specification rather than an assumed extra revenue stream.
Cleaning and the packed-product boundary
Extractor contact zones, finisher screens and tanks have different cleaning access needs. Review oily rind residues and pulp deposits with the selected equipment configuration.
Assign cleaning responsibilities to the open preparation zone and the closed product circuit separately. Confirm which parts require removal or inspection and how cleaning effectiveness will be demonstrated with the actual product soil.
Packaging and storage
Specify whether the NFC juice or concentrate base is supplied as a chilled, frozen, otherwise treated or aseptically handled ingredient, as applicable to the developed product. Package material, closure, fill conditions and distribution are a connected system. Any claimed ambient stability or shelf life requires product- and package-specific validation; the process introduction does not set treatment temperatures or holding times.
Prepare the product and batch brief
- Compare representative early and late accepted lots, including fruit-size extremes, while keeping the final pulp and product route constant.
- Provide the intended finished-product specification, representative raw-material samples, daily operating pattern and seasonal peak load.
- Identify available utilities, factory layout, drainage, reject collection and the exact inlet/outlet conditions of equipment supplied by others.
- Agree trial acceptance criteria and define the preservation, filling, cleaning and commissioning responsibilities before finalising the equipment scope.
Orange processing questions
What changes between NFC and concentrate projects?
The extraction front end may share equipment principles, but concentration, aroma handling, product transfer and downstream specifications differ. Define the actual product and storage system before assembling an equipment list.
Can yield be specified from fruit weight alone?
A useful trial separately records incoming fruit, accepted fruit, juice, retained pulp and rejects. Lot condition and the target juice quality affect recovery; a simple fruit-to-liquid ratio does not describe the complete process.
What should a useful orange trial establish?
Compare representative early and late accepted lots, including fruit-size extremes, while keeping the final pulp and product route constant. Record incoming material, accepted feed, finished ingredient and each reject stream separately. Keep settings, samples and analytical methods with the trial record so the result can be compared with subsequent seasonal lots.
